Hi everybody, I am wondering if anybody can help me find out how to start learning to produce trance music. I used to play the keyboard when I was younger (about 8 years old, and I am now 19) and I don't remember much of how to play but will it be helpful for me to know the chords/scales and all the notes on a keyboard? Trance music is one of the few things that lets me let go of the stress in my life and enjoy myself. Being able to make my own sounds after being inspired by ATB and many other artists would give me the most pleasure. Thanks to all the responses ahead of time!

Hello Ian !

The first thing that you need is a good sequencer.
It's a software on which you can write melodies, making beats and use virtual instruments, effects etc.
That's the basic thing for all producers. From my experience I can recommend you FL Studio or Ableton.
FL it's the cheapest digital audio workstation. Visit this site
http://flstudio.image-line.com/documents/what.html.
There is propably demo for download. Try it, look how it works, what you can do with it
(and believe me - you can really do a lot with FL Studio).
That is from my experience.
I hope that it will work for you as it work for me.

If I can help you somehow - feel free to ask.
Good luck and have fun

I think you should start to seek for your preferred sequencer . The Fl is really cheap but it's not really usefull , at least for me . I prefer the Ableton Live .
After that You have to btake a look for the instruments , and the samples . Then You can start making noises . Good luck with it .

i had the same question as you about a month ago and I started using reason 4.0 its a lot of fun creating music and its simple to use after you look at some tutorials. Just make sure they are not the do this, do that and you have a song tutorial. use the ones that teach you how to use the equipment.

I posted a sample of the song im working on on my myspace:http://www.myspace.com/reason4amindstorm

You can Demo a few different sequencers and see which one you like best! Same goes for VST's, theres lot of great freeware out there. Demo the following:

Z3ta+
Sylenth
Native Intruments Plugins, they have tonnes of great stuff
